That’s why you’re here.
The water in the creek behind the farm, blanketed with a pastel-green moss. Its sound is the only one you can identify in the buzz of summer.
It’s just after 10 a.m. In the creek is a pump, simple and motor-powered, for filling up the farm’s well. The water comes out clear into the stone well; there’s a filter on the other end of the pump.
There, you, who’ve never worked on a farm before, are struck by the little kiwi farm. A tangle of green rules everywhere here except for the black eye of the well and the old strong brown posts that support the network of thin guidelines and wires.
You spent the first two hours of this July morning tying bamboo and iron posts to this grid. The kiwi plants grip and grow around these posts. By now, almost all of them are pointing straight into the sky.
The water finally comes up to the top of the well. “After we put the pump on the truck it’s a break,” says Mr. Kogura, the farmer. There are still two more hours in your workday. But though there’s still work to do, you already feel satisfied. The green world around you keeps buzzing, and that’s why you’re here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
