Reedの日記5 Persimmon picking & e-fence restoration

Today we returned to the hilltop kaki grove to try to finish checking our mistakes, to pick persimmons that didn’t grow well, and to work on an interesting project.

I spent most of the morning hunting down any places where we left more than one kaki on a branch or where the fruit grew awkwardly.

These bunches are our main target!

Kaki like this are also a waste of their trees’ resources, so we pick them from the trees, too.

I have some trouble with this activity, since I don’t know as much about taking care of these trees as Kogura and Shiromoto-chan do. However, I did learn something from Kogura-san today, namely that shoots like this one that grow straight up are new and may need to be pruned so that they can grow well.

This shoot isn’t ready to grow fruit yet.

After it hit 11 a.m., I got to work on my second task for the day, which was to clear the path of these electrified wires around the farm:

We’re going to put some of the persimmons on the trees in alcohol-filled bags soon, and they might start to attract boar living in the woods. To keep them out, we’ll need to get this electric fence up and running. I just think that the range of different techniques used around the farm is cool.

Thank you for reading.
Sincerely,
Reed

P.s., I also saw my first praying mantis today.
