Reedの日記9 Make a Kurogoma-Gaki

Kogura-san has a few farms of his own, but he also rents out land that belongs to other people to work. 

This farm belongs to a nice old lady, Morita-san. We’ve come here a few times to work on her kaki trees. This diary, I want to share express my appreciation for her!

Whenever we come here, Morita-san lets us take breaks in a little garage.

It might just be a regular garage, but it’s really nice for us farmers to get to rest indoors.

This is “Robot-kun.” I always wonder who drew him, and how long ago.

On top of letting us take breaks in her garage, the farm owner always brings out snacks for us.

I really like the snack in those orange bags, which is called kakinotane. There are peanuts and peas (I don’t know) in it, and everything is coated with Japanese spices.

Morita-san also brought each of us some homemade ume juice and ice cream. Needless to say, it makes me truly happy how nice she is!

As nice as the breaks here are, they aren’t the only thing that we do all day!

Today’s main activity was applying ethanol-filled bags to the fruit around the farm. It was my first time actually getting to do this, so let me walk all of you through the points Kogura-san taught me.

First comes opening up these bags.

I’m doing it one-handed for the photo, but you want to use both hands.

These ethanol cubes have to stay cold, so we take about 30-40 out of the cooler at a time.

After you put the cube in the bag, all you have left to do is wrap it around the fruit.

As Kogura-san explained, the best way to do that is by starting from the far end of the fruit:

Let the rubber band gently pull the bag around the fruit

Voila!

Finally, we want to check that the bag isn’t covering up the leaves. That would choke the plant’s air supply.

It’s good to go!
