Reedの日記7 My first persimmon

Hello, readers!
In today’s diary entry, we’ve gone to a different farm from last week, when we were at the upper kaki farm.
To be specific, we went down the hill from it.

Let me give you the lay of the land:

The farm with this mark (上 ue) is the upper farm, and the one with 下 (shita) is the lower one, where I worked today. There’s a thick bamboo forest growing on the hill between them. Now that we finished the upper farm, the other farmers and I have to keep on working down here.

Today’s workflow was just like the last few times’, so I won’t go back over it too much.
We’re double-checking our work on these trees, making sure that the fruit on them grow as well as possible.
That mostly means climbing up in the branches to pick off any extra fruits that were accidentally left behind.

In between working on the trees, Kogura-san and I had some good conversations here today. We sat on some handmade seating built from leftover pallets:

Kogura-san also showed me something really cool today!

There are some orange fruits that we’re supposed to pick from the persimmon trees like this:

These are infested with a bug called a hetamushi.
But Kogura-san showed me that you can actually eat these fruits instead of just throwing them out!
The bugs actually make the persimmon become sweet.
I felt like I was on a nature documentary eating one of these, but it was really good to eat!

Thanks for reading.
Reed
