Today we’re working at Kogura-san’s assistant Shiromoto-chan’s farm.

Shiromoto-chan’s farm
The farm stretches to the top of the hill in this picture.
Most of the farm is Japanese persimmon, or kaki, trees. Today’s work is pruning the branches of those trees.

The basic goal is to remove all but one fruit from each branch of the tree so that the persimmon can grow large and delicious.
We also carefully choose the ideal fruit to leave on the tree according to a few different criteria, like shade and fruit shape.

I have been doing this task regularly since I started working with Kogura-san. In fact, this is the farm work I have spent the most time doing. It’s nice to be able to work in the shade of the trees, and there are also sometimes cool breezes up in the canopy. I’m excited for my first harvest, when I’ll get to see all the fruit I’ve picked reach its destination.
